Orcas Island Film Festival (OIFF): October 6-9, 2017
The fourth annual Orcas Island Film Festival (OIFF) takes place in the arts-rich village of Eastsound, and focuses on feature-length films that are just entering the film festival circuit. Exciting Q&As by directors, actors and other artists are a highlight of this intimate festival. Many of the films shown at OIFF have gone on to garner Academy Awards and other major awards in past years. The festival will showcase three short films funded by OIFF grants awarded earlier this year. Grant-awarded filmmakers used the Islands as the canvas to create short inspirational works. New this year is a summer film series of festival favorites to help promote OIFF.
Friday Harbor Film Festival: November 3-5, 2017
The fifth annual Friday Harbor Film Festival – Stories from the Pacific Rim & Beyond, carries forward the momentum of the past four years’ successes. In addition to award-winning documentary films, several premiers and special events, this film festival focuses on the filmmakers themselves, with Q&A sessions from every filmmaker. A special gala and awards ceremony honors Andrew V. McLaglen Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and Blackfeet activist, Elouise Cobell, whose story is told in the film, 100 Years: One Woman’s Fight for Justice. Several venues within easy walking distance of the ferry terminal, airport and float plane dock, present the opportunity to discover the historic waterfront town’s galleries, museums and shops without a car.
Lopez, Orcas and San Juan Islands will have lodging specials, farm tours, farmers markets, wine events and so much more during the Savor the San Juans: A Celebration of Food, Farms & Film.
