With only 17 double gold gin winners around the globe (201 across every spirits category of 1,899 entries), 3 Howls was the single double gold gin winner from the Northwest. That award was the 30th award the distillery has received for its premium spirits in the last two years.

The 39 judges of the 2016 competition were established spirits-industry experts, including Anthony Dias Blue, Tony Abou-Ganim, Charles Joly, David Wondrich, Charlotte Voisey, and Dale DeGroff. Over a rigorous four day blind tasting, each panel of judges must find an entry worthy of a gold medal in order for it to be awarded a double gold.

It has been five years since a Washington distillery has earned a double gold in the gin category, and there are just four other distilleries in the Northwest to have ever produced a double-gold-winning gin. This year, the competition also awarded 3 Howls four other medals for its Vodka, Old Fashioned Gin, Spiced Rum, and the recently launched Backbeat Bourbon.

The “Navy Strength” name comes from sailors in the British navy, who used to be paid in rations of liquor. Ever concerned they were being ripped off by their employer, they would test the potency of the liquor by lighting it with gunpowder. If it lit, they knew they were being compensated fairly. The Navy Strength Gin lives up to its namesake, coming in at 57 percent ABV, about 12 percent above standard gins. It is slightly less dry than a London dry gin and contains more root ingredients in the botanical base, resulting in an earthier flavor.
